BJD MP urges NCST to probe Rayagada clash
BJD Rajya Sabha MP Sasmit Patra

Koraput: BJD Rajya Sabha MP Sasmit Patra has urged National Commission for Scheduled Tribes (NCST) to begin an urgent inquiry into alleged police excesses and violations of tribal rights in Sijimali region of Rayagada district. In a letter addressed to NCST chairperson Antar Singh Arya on Sunday, Patra has urged to invoke the commission’s constitutional mandate under Article 338A, citing serious concerns over recent developments linked to a proposed bauxite mining project and related road construction activities. The appeal comes in the backdrop of the April 6 incident near Kantamal village, where police and tribal protesters clashed each other over a proposed bauxite mining-linked road project, injuring 70 people, including 58 police personnel.Sasmit flagged multiple legal and constitutional issues arising from the situation. “These developments raise grave constitutional and legal questions, including non-compliance with safeguards under the Forest Rights Act and breach of mandatory provisions of the PESA Act, particularly with regard to free, prior and informed consent of Gram Sabhas,” he stated.
