Daltonganj Tragedy: What Drove a Cousin to Murder and Suicide?

Daltonganj: An 18-year-old tribal girl was hacked to death by her cousin in a village under Sadar police station limits in the early hours of Monday. The assailant, a 23-year-old man, allegedly committed suicide by jumping in front of a moving train between Chiyanki and Kechki railway stations. While police said the cause of murder was yet to become clear, locals alleged that the two were in a relationship which turned sour. The deceased was identified as Khushbu Kumari and Bittu Singh. While Khushbu’s body was found in a room of her uncle’s home in Chiyanki, Bittu’s body was recovered on the railway tracks two hours later, roughly 2 km away from the house, police said.“The girl must have died on the spot as her wounds in the neck were fatal,” said officer in charge of the Sadar police station Lalji, adding that they have seized the axe. Lalji said the motive behind the murder was not clear. “Other members of the family, who were in the house, claimed they did not hear any noise. A probe is underway to find out how no one heard any cries,” a police source said.Daltonganj railway station superintendent Umesh Kumar Singh added that the RPF found Bittu’s body on the tracks. An FIR was yet to be registered in the incident. Khusbhu and Bittu’s bodies were sent to Medinirai Medical College and Hospital for postmortem examination.
