95% of accidents this Q1 were due to rash driving, say police

Panaji: Around 95% of all accidents reported in Goa the first three months of 2026 were due to rash and negligent driving, according to analysis by the police’s traffic cell. It also stated that 43% of the accidents were on national highways, 80% on straight roads, and 15% on curved roads.A total of 25% of the reported road accidents occurred on the weekends.A senior police officer said that accidents involving four-wheelers accounted for over 40% of accidents, followed by those involving two-wheelers with 44%.Traffic cell analysis said that the maximum number of road users who got killed were motorcyclists, 47 (74%), and most accidents occurred between 3pm and 4pm.“The most accidents have been reported on Sunday, with 13%, followed by Saturdays, also around 13%,” said the officer said, who added that 390 accidents occurred during daytime and 248 at night.A senior officer said that strict enforcement and effective traffic control with the presence of police personnel on national highways, state highways and other roads would go a long way in reducing accidents, including fatalities. “They should book traffic offenders with the sole purpose of reducing accidents and not book petty MV cases for increasing the number of challans or fines,” said the officer.The officer also said that all the police stations in Goa should conduct special drives at accident-prone zones to book offenders so as to reduce accidents and fatalities.In the first quarter of the year, there was a 7% rise in fatalities and accidents compared to the corresponding period of 2025.For March, 638 accidents were reported in the state, as against 596 cases reported last March, an increase of 42 cases. Fatalities, meanwhile, increased by four, with 63 this March compared to 59 last March.A total of 60 fatal accidents were reported till March 2026, a slight increase from the 58 reported till March 2025.A fatal road accident refers to a road traffic incident resulting in death, while road deaths quantify the number of fatalities arising from these accidents.
