In 2010, Walsh was CEO of British Airways. During that time, clouds of ash arising from the volcanic eruption in Iceland had halted flights in the north-western airspace of Europe for 6 days. Due to security reasons no one was willing to take risks and companies were suffering losses.

Then Walsh himself went out on a test flight in a Boeing aircraft and flew over the ash-affected area for about 2.5 hours. The engine was found safe during investigation. After this, passenger flights could resume.

In 2010, flights in Europe were closed for 6 days due to the volcanic eruption in Iceland.

British Airways employees gave up salary on his request

Walsh proved to be the company’s hero even during the global recession. In 2009-10, British Airways was facing a loss of Rs 6,570 crore, when they took a big step. Walsh appealed to 40 thousand employees to work without salary for a month to save the company. He himself gave up one month’s salary. This brought great financial relief to the company.

Once an agreement was reached with the trade unions. This resulted in a successful 10-year funding plan for the company’s pension deficit of Rs 24,750 crore and eliminated it.

In his resignation letter to Rahul Bhatia, Peter Elbers has cited personal reasons for leaving the post. He also appealed to the company to end his notice period so that he can resign with immediate effect.

₹22 crore fine was imposed due to irregularities in flight operations

In December-2026, IndiGo had to face a huge flight operations crisis. During that time, about 3 lakh passengers were left stranded, after which aviation regulator DGCA investigated and found that the airline was negligent in passenger comfort and safety standards. After this, a penalty of ₹ 22.20 crore was imposed on Indigo. After this incident, coordination between the board and the CEO started deteriorating.

Peter Elbers was under pressure since December

Peter Elbers took command of IndiGo in September 2022. In December last year, the airline faced the worst operational crisis in its history.
