Dianna Russini is at the center of a big online debate after leaving her job at The Athletic. The 43-year-old reporter stepped down just days after denying rumors about her and Mike Vrabel. Now, Dave Portnoy has openly questioned her explanation, which has made the situation even more heated across social media.

Dave Portnoy questions Dianna Russini‘s exit after Mike Vrabel rumors and calls her statement confusing

The issue started when photos showed Dianna Russini and Mike Vrabel spending time together at a resort in Arizona. The images led to rumors that the two were having an affair. Both are married, and both pushed back on what people were saying.Soon after, Russini announced she would leave The Athletic before her contract ended on June 30. In her letter to Executive Editor Steven Ginsberg, she wrote:“Rather than allowing this to continue, I have decided to step aside now, before my current contract expires on June 30. I do so not because I accept the narrative that has been constructed around this episode, but because I refuse to lend it further oxygen or to let it define me or my career.”But Dave Portnoy did not agree with her reasoning. Posting on X, he said:“If we’re just being honest this explanation really makes zero sense. I don’t think anybody should lose their job over alleged canoodling but this statement makes it seem like there was definitely canoodling happening.”He added:“An innocent canoodler would prob welcome a thorough investigation to prove their innocence and exonerate themselves right? This screams guilty canoodler to me.”His comments quickly spread online, with many people reacting on both sides.

Jemele Hill defends Dianna Russini while fans debate ethics, fairness, and media standards

Some fans supported Portnoy’s view, saying Russini could have stayed and cleared her name with proof. One user wrote that if the facts were wrong, she could have shown “friends, receipts, photos” instead of leaving.Another said it felt like a “you can’t fire me, I quit” moment. However, not everyone agreed. Jemele Hill spoke in Russini’s defense. She pointed out that men in similar roles are often not judged the same way. Hill wrote:“I’ll say this: While the photos raised questions, if male insiders were held to a similar standard of ethics, none of them would exist.”Some users also said the issue is not about rumors, but about journalism ethics and public trust.Russini had joined The Athletic in 2023 after spending nearly ten years at ESPN. She worked as an NFL insider, analyst, and anchor during her time there.Meanwhile, Mike Vrabel has stayed focused on his team. He missed a recent Patriots pre-draft press event, but Eliot Wolf said everything is normal. He told reporters:“Very involved, business as usual. He’s been in there with us, this round of meetings, probably a little more than he was last year.”
