Gurgaon: The Haryana government has announced a one-time waiver on surcharge for pending water and sewerage dues.According to a notification from the ULB department, consumers who clear their outstanding dues for the period up to Dec 31, 2025, by May 31, 2026, will be granted a 100% waiver on accumulated surcharge/penalty, adding that water supply to defaulting consumers may be disconnected after the end of the month. The waiver is applicable only if consumers also pay their current bills. The order further specifies that the benefit will be extended only to consumers with metered connections. Those using unmetered connections must first get a meter installed to avail the scheme. In a key amendment to existing rules, the government has also introduced a one-time penalty of 10% on unpaid water and sewerage charges if bills are not cleared by the due date. This penalty will be levied only on the current bill and not on the cumulative outstanding amount in subsequent billing cycles. The amendment was made under provisions of the Haryana Municipal Corporation Act, 1994, and takes immediate effect. It modifies an earlier order issued on March 9, 2011. Officials said the move is aimed at improving revenue collection while providing relief to consumers burdened by accumulated penalties. In FY 2025-26, MCG earned a revenue of Rs 56 crore, up from Rs 16 crore in 2024-25. As per the current FY’s income projections of MCG, income from water and sewerage charges is expected to rise sharply to Rs 80 crore. However, the MCG spends more on the purchase of bulk water from GMDA, for which the allocation for the current FY is Rs 135 crore. In the last FY, the MCG spent over Rs 241 crore on bulk water purchase.MCG officials also said that there are plans to integrate water and sewerage connections with the no-dues certificate portal, on the lines of property tax, which is required while selling off and purchasing any property.
