Google rules out Apple-style liquid glass design for Pixel

Speculation around Apple’s new Liquid Glass UI design spilling over to Android has been put to rest. Recently, a mockup image was seen circulating online suggesting that Google’s Pixel phones might just adopt Apple’s translucent, glass-like interface. However, Google has dismissed this development. According to a report by 9to5Google, Google’s Sameer Samat, president of the Android ecosystem, dismissed the idea of Android adopting Apple’s liquid glass design. “Not happening! Y’all are wild ???”, wrote Samat. His response makes clear that Google intends to stick with its own design philosophy rather than mimic Apple’s approach.

Android material design vs Apple’s liquid glass design

Apple’s Liquid Glass emphasizes layered translucency and floating UI elements, sparking debate among designers and users. While some Android OEMs such as Oppo, Xiaomi, and Samsung have already introduced Apple-inspired tweaks in their skins, Google remains committed to Material Design, which has evolved into Material 3 Expressive. This design language focuses on personalization, accessibility, and user-friendly layouts. Upcoming Android updates are expected to expand blur effects and dynamic themes, but Google insists these refinements are not the same as Apple’s Liquid Glass.

What’s next for Android

Google has teased that “The Android Show” on May 12, 2026 will showcase one of the biggest years yet for Android. Industry watchers expect announcements around deeper AI integration, refinements in Material Design, and possibly new under-display biometric technologies. For Pixel users, the message is clear: Liquid Glass is off the table, and Google will continue to differentiate its devices with its own design identity.
