Back in 2010, ‘Jaggubhai’ became one of the most talked-about films in Tamil cinema, not just for its scale but also for the troubles surrounding it. Headlined by Sarathkumar, the film faced repeated hurdles, from casting changes to production delays. What truly shook the industry was an unprecedented piracy issue that unfolded just days before its planned release.
From Rajinikanth’s dream project to revival
Interestingly, ‘Jaggubhai’ was initially envisioned as a grand project starring Rajinikanth in the early 2000s. After the setback of ‘Baba’, the superstar had planned a comeback with the film under director KS Ravikumar, with Aishwarya Rai reportedly attached. However, creative differences led to the project being shelved.Years later, the film was revived with Sarathkumar and Shriya Saran in lead roles. Mounted on a significant budget and shot across several international locations, the film was being prepared for a grand release.In a shocking turn of events, an unfinished version of ‘Jaggubhai’, without sound design and final edits, was leaked online. Within hours, pirated CDs and DVDs spread across the market, leaving the makers devastated. The incident marked a turning point, as such large-scale leaks of unreleased films were rare at the time. Unable to trace how the footage was leaked, the team faced a crisis that threatened the future of the project.In response, a massive press meet was organized in Chennai by Sarathkumar and producer Radhika Sarathkumar. The gathering saw the presence of stalwarts like Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan, along with several prominent voices from the industry.According to India Today, an emotional KS Ravikumar addressed the media, saying, “Our efforts of more than a year have been wasted.” Rajinikanth warned, “You might think that Rajini knows a bus conductor’s job. But can I go back to being a conductor?” He stressed that failure to act against piracy could put livelihoods at risk.Kamal Haasan also spoke strongly on the issue, saying, “People won’t hesitate to buy a DVD or CD if it is available in every road junction. We have to make them realize that when they buy such pirated CDs, the money they give for such a purchase becomes black money.”The situation turned deeply emotional as Sarathkumar and Radhika broke down while addressing the media. “The bits shown on the net are not even edited and there are no sound effects. We are not worried about the money we had invested in the film but what about the families of those who gave it all for the film?” they said. They further added, “The miscreants who leaked the film could have shot us on the streets instead of indulging in such activities.“
What happened after the release of ‘Jaggubhai’
Taking the matter forward, leading figures including Rajinikanth, Kamal Haasan and Sarathkumar approached then Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi to demand stricter anti-piracy laws. Despite the setback, the team reshot portions including the climax and released ‘Jaggubhai’ on January 29, 2010. However, with much of the storyline already leaked, the film struggled at the box office and became a stark reminder of piracy’s damaging impact on cinema.
