RPCAU develops battery-powered cabbage harvester
A break grounding automated cabbage harvester has emerged from RPCAU in Pusa, promising to transform farming for Bihar’s cabbage growers. This eco-friendly, battery-operated machine eliminates the need for bending over during harvest, diminishing physical fatigue and cutting labor expenses by around 15%. After successful field trials, this innovation is poised to reshape the future of cabbage farming in the region.

Patna: Scientists at Rajendra Prasad Central Agricultural University (RPCAU), Pusa, have developed a specialized machine to automate cabbage harvesting, offering relief to farmers.The project, launched in 2019 and completed in 2023 under principal scientist PK Pranab, was recently showcased at the university’s annual Kisan Mela. Built on a two-wheeled frame resembling a bicycle, the machine is highly manoeuvrable and operates on a 12-volt Lithium-ion battery, delivering up to five hours of continuous use. It can harvest 207 to 221 cabbages per hour.Pranab said, “It features a lever-operated cutting blade coupled with an integrated conveyor belt system that transfers harvested produce directly to a storage container.” He added, “The machine allows farmers to harvest without bending, significantly reducing their physical strain.”The innovation is expected to reduce labor costs by 15%, saving about Rs 2,500 per hectare. “Currently, cabbage harvesting involves significant manual labour, including bending and secondary trimming to make the produce ‘market-ready’,” Pranab said.RPCAU vice-chancellor PS Pandey said, “The machine developed by the scientists at the College of Agricultural Engineering and Technology is highly beneficial for the local farmers.” He added, “It has been specifically designed to suit the agricultural conditions and soil topography of Bihar and has already undergone successful field trials.”The university estimates the manufacturing cost at around Rs 10,000 per unit and is working on patents and plans for large-scale production.
