Kali, a stray dog from Dhirakula village in Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district, is now remembered as the dog who gave her life to protect more than 30 kindergarten children from a venomous snake.According to an Odisha Tv report, around 8:30 am on a Monday, over 30 students of Sri Jagannath Sishu Vidya Mandir were sitting outside their school, when a poisonous snake slithered dangerously close to the premises. Before any adult could react, Kali sensed the danger and sprang into action without a second thought. She rushed toward the reptile, placing herself between the snake and the children, and engaged it in a fierce fight.

A fight that cost her life

Villagers said Kali fought bravely, refusing to back down even as the snake struck her repeatedly. She managed to kill the snake, but was bitten on the mouth during the struggle and later died from the venom. The dog’s injuries were severe, but her aggression and persistence kept the snake from reaching the children. Ultimately, she killed the reptile, ensuring no child was harmed. The price of that protection was Kali’s life. After the snake was dead, she collapsed and died soon after from the venom. Her sacrifice left the village stunned and grateful.

A hero’s final farewell

In Dhirakula, Kali’s death was not treated like the passing of just another stray. According to Dailyhunt, villagers “bid an emotional farewell to the animal, performing its last rites with full rituals usually reserved for humans.” They covered her body with a white cloth, decorated it with flowers, and placed it on a small trolley that was taken in a procession around the village before burial. For many residents, Kali went from being an unnoticed dog on the roadside to a named guardian of the village’s children.
