JAISALMER: In a remarkable innovation from the dessert area of Rajasthan’s Barmer district, young entrepreneur Dungar Singh Sodha has developed a small wind turbine aimed at providing a permanent solution to power cuts in remote and desert regions. His innovation is gaining significant recognition not only across India but also internationally, with demand emerging from over 50 countries.A resident of Sankhali village in Barmer, Sodha was inspired during the devastating floods of 2006, when prolonged power outages caused severe hardships for local residents. Growing up in a desert and border region where electricity disruptions are routine, he realized the need for a sustainable and affordable energy solution.Since installing large wind turbines is not feasible for everyone, Sodha focused on creating a compact and cost-effective alternative. Despite limited formal education, he conducted extensive research through YouTube, academic papers, and other sources to develop his prototype.Starting with basic materials like aluminum sheets and old fan blades, he gradually refined his design. Today, his portable wind turbine—developed under his company “Sunwind Innovative”—is a 1 kW unit that can be installed on rooftops, balconies, or open spaces. It is designed especially for low-wind areas like Rajasthan. The turbine can generate 10–20 units of electricity per day under favorable wind conditions and up to 300 units per month if operated for around 10 hours daily. It can be directly connected to an inverter and has the potential to reduce electricity bills to nearly zero for up to 20 years. With a starting price of around Rs 50,000, it is accessible to common households and farmers.Sodha’s company has received licenses and patents for its products, and is considered India’s first specialized portable wind turbine manufacturer. His turbines are already being used in multiple Indian states, including in army camps, schools, and homes. In 2024, he signed an MoU worth Rs 50 crore with the Gujarat government at the Vibrant Gujarat Summit. The company is also working on new variants, including highway-based and cloth-based turbines.Starting his journey with just Rs 50,000 and no office—initially operating from a friend’s workspace—Sodha has now reached a stage where companies are ready to provide advance payments for production. His turbines are also being installed on a large scale in Greece, and he plans to begin expanded operations in Rajasthan soon.Dungar Singh Sodha’s innovation stands as a beacon of hope for rural India, proving that with determination, creativity, and hard work, even the toughest challenges can be transformed into opportunities.
