Jhansi: A 70-year-old man who was driving his scooter was knocked off by a speeding SUV near Bundelkhand University campus here on Saturday, killing him on the spot. The occupants of the SUV absconded from the place after abandoning the vehicle.The deceased, Maniram Verma, retired as a sub-registrar in the Bundelkhand University a decade ago and was living in the campus residential complex. In the daytime, he went out to buy some household things. As he was moving on the side of the road, a black SUV suddenly came out from the examination hall building area of the university campus and hit Verma.The impact was so severe that the tires of the SUV went over Verma, who was dragged for a few meters on the road along with the scooter before it stopped after hitting the footpath.Bystanders, along with police, family members and university officials, rushed to the site. Verma was taken to hospital, where he was declared dead.Some of the bystanders informed that a few policemen in uniform were sitting inside the SUV, who swiftly got down along with their belongings and left the place, leaving behind the SUV.However, police said that they have lodged an FIR based on the vehicle number as there was no mention of the presence of any particular person inside the SUV in the complaint.SP city Preeti Singh said, “The entire area is surrounded by CCTV cameras and we will soon locate the offenders and take legal action. The postmortem was performed and the body was handed over to the family members.”
