A few years ago, not many would have predicted that we would live in a world that runs on data. Athletes track every step, every heartbeat and every calorie burned; drivers monitor fuel efficiency in real time, and even sleep, which the most passive thing a human being does, is now logged, analyzed and scored every morning. The logic behind all of it is straightforward: if you can measure something, you can improve it. It was only a matter of time before that same thinking made its way into the bathroom. In a world where everything is tracked and optimized, your toothbrush has finally caught up. Brushing your teeth is one of the most routine acts in daily life – two minutes, twice a day, barely a thought given to it yet it remains one of the most important tasks in your day. Yet poor brushing technique is one of the most common causes of preventable dental problems, which may cost a fortune if ignored.Oral-B realized that and its Oral-B iO Series 9 is built on the idea that even this small, unglamorous habit deserves the same data-driven attention we give everything else – that too at a reduced price point when compared with dentist bills. In India, it retails at Rs 16,499, though it has been available on Amazon for around Rs 10,000. The question is whether it actually delivers, or whether the technology is just clever packaging around something that did not need to be complicated. After spending time with the iO9, the answer is: mostly yes, with a few important caveats.
Oral-B iO9 electric toothbrush design
If you were to purchase one in a store, you would look at racks with multiple shades and colors of toothbrushes, hanging one behind another. But the iO Series 9 is the flagship of Oral-B’s consumer lineup, which means what you get for that price is a brushing experience that is genuinely different from anything below it in the range.

I’ve been using an electric toothbrush from some time now but with Oral-B iO9 electric toothbrush, there is a smart factor attached. At its core is a redesigned magnetic iO motor that drives the brush’s oscillating-rotating motion, paired with micro-vibrations that have become a defining feature of the iO platform. The result is cleaning performance that is consistently strong, plaque removal along the gum line is effective. The motor of iO9 is quieter as compared to older Oral-B brushes, the motion feels more controlled and brushing for the full two minutes is comfortable rather than something to endure. Effectiveness has been made a bit more refined.
Performance: 7 modes, one pressure ring and a color display
The iO9 offers seven cleaning modes: Daily Clean, Sensitive, Whiten, Gum Care, Intense, Super Sensitive and Tongue Clean. In each case, the brush adjusts the brush’s movement and intensity. For most people, Daily Clean and Sensitive will cover the vast majority of sessions but having the range available is useful in certain scenarios. For example, anyone with gum sensitivity or a preference for gentler brushing on some days is covered. The pressure sensor, displayed as a light ring around the base of the brush head, is one of the most practical features on the handle. Do you need it? The initial answer would be a big NO. But does it help? Yes. Green means your pressure is right. Red means you are pressing too hard. White means you are barely making contact. It sounds simple but in practice, it changes brushing behavior in a way that is hard to ignore. It not only helps you avoid running the bristles but teaches you the right way to brush. Over time, it builds the kind of muscle memory that dental professionals spend years trying to teach.

The color display on the handle adds a layer of everyday clarity. Brushing modes are shown as text labels and battery percentage is always visible – which proved one of the biggest relieving features. I’ve had experiences in where my toothbrush is low on battery and it ‘dies’ mid-way during my brushing. But with battery indicator, I knew when the toothbrush needed charging. A familiar built-in two-minute timer and 30-second pacer round out the on-handle experience.Coming to the smart features. What’s smart with the iO9 is that the brush connects to the Oral-B app on your smartphone via Bluetooth. Pairing is quick, automatic in subsequent sessions and generally reliable. The app acts as the command center for everything the handle cannot display on its own. The headline feature is real-time position tracking by using sensors built into the handle, the iO9 attempts to monitor which of 16 distinct zones of your mouth you are currently brushing — and maps your coverage in real time on your phone screen. This is a level of detail that no other consumer toothbrush currently offers. In practice, the tracking is good but not 10-on-10. For example, the brush did not ‘track’ the fibers of cardamom stuck in-between my teeth. I could feel it with my tongue but the toothbrush app says the area is clean. I had to floss. The sensor misidentified which zone you are brushing, sometimes registers zones with a noticeable lag, and occasionally fails to register them at all.

Secondly, there’s another app on the phone, which some may not want. Thirdly, if they’ve learned brushing in 15 days using the data in the app, why do they need constant tracking. Having said that, the app itself is well-designed and genuinely informative. Brushing history, coverage maps, mode customisation, battery monitoring and brush head tracking are all presented clearly.
Battery life and charging
Battery life is solid. Oral-B rates the iO9 at up to two weeks of regular use, and real-world performance comes close to that mark with about 10-11 days use a single charge. However, it is yet to be seen whether this stays like this after 6-8 months. This is because my previous Oral-B toothbrush’s battery output decline overtime. The magnetic charger tops the brush up fully in around three hours. The charging travel case included in the box is functional and sturdy, capable of charging the handle on the go. So, instead of using a manual toothbrush, using mouthwash and worrying about handling an electric toothbrush on a long flight, you can keep following the routine.

Clearly there are some downsides worth knowing. There is no USB charging option, which means you must carry the charger when you are travelling. The iO9 requires proprietary iO-specific brush heads, which are also expensive to replace, adding to the long-term cost of ownership.Think of it as a coach that is specifically hired for most valuable feedback when it comes to your oral hygiene but despite so many features, toothbrush is not a replacement for a dentist. It does helps you maintain a hygiene so that you don’t have to frequently visit the dentist. Having said that, while in a way you are saving money and a trip to the clinic but also paying a coach, which in monetary terms, may be a deal breaker for some – making this a niche product.
Verdict: Who is it for?
The Oral-B iO Series 9 is not the toothbrush for everyone. If you brush well already, are not interested in data, and are happy with a solid mid-range electric brush, or even your manual toothbrush, there is no compelling reason to spend this much. But if you are someone who appreciates feedback, wants to build genuinely better habits, and is drawn to the idea of bringing the same data-driven mindset to your oral care that you already apply to your fitness or sleep, the iO9 is the best consumer toothbrush currently available for that purpose. The cleaning is excellent; The experience is refined and comfortable. The pressure sensor works exactly as promised, and the smart tracking, imperfections and all, offers a level of insight into daily brushing habits that simply does not exist elsewhere at this price point. It is best for curious users, those building better dental habits, people who want structured feedback on their brushing technique. The toothbrush is not ideal for budget-conscious buyers, those who prefer simplicity, or anyone who finds app-connected devices more hassle than they are worth.
