HYDERABAD: Slamming the Badminton World Federation’s (BWF) decision to change the scoring system as “short-sighted,” renowned Indian coach U Vimal Kumar called it a dilution of the sport without addressing the real challenges the game is facing. The AGM of the BWF approved the adoption of the 3×15 point system with over two-thirds majority on Saturday. The new format will take effect on January 4, 2027. “It seems the Badminton World Federation (BWF) is trying to make badminton as easy as pickleball and padel. An interesting approach to promoting a sport has always stood for endurance, skill and mental toughness. Not sure if this is evolution…or dilution,” Vimal said on Sunday. However, chief coach Pullela Gopichand had earlier pointed out that the 15-point format is easier for players with injuries. He considers the move necessary as the sport has become too physical under the 3×21 format. While the present generation of shuttlers across the world expressed mixed views on the change, most Indians said they like the 21×3, even though 15×3 suits their play.Olympian and four-time CWG medalist Aparna Popat said, “You need to begin well in the new format. Comebacks will be difficult and the format will affect the risk-taking ability.”“There will be resistance for any change. They attempted to change last year too. Now that it is done, we have no option but to adapt to the new system. Initially, 15×3 may help attacking players. Pretty soon, everyone will adapt to it,” added Aparna, who played the 21×3, 11×3 and 7×5 formats.Two-time Asian Games bronze medallist and the mentor of Chirag Shetty, Uday Pawar is worried that the game may lose some of its charm.Uber Cup: India revive QF hopes with Ukraine winHorsens (Denmark): The young Indian women’s team received a massive morale boost with a commanding 4-1 victory over European Championships bronze medalist Ukraine in their second Group A clash here, bouncing back strongly after a narrow 2-3 loss to hosts Denmark in the opener.
