Gurgaon: The Haryana State Industrial and Infrastructure Development Corporation (HSIIDC) has floated a tender to widen and redesign a 1.6-km service road along the Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway, between Shankar Chowk and Atlas Chowk. The project has been pegged at Rs 19.8 crore, and once work is awarded, it is expected to take at least a year for completion. At present, the service road is approximately 7 meters wide and is frequently choked by heavy office traffic, on-street parking and ongoing commercial development. With several offices along the road and more under construction, including Atrium Place, the load on this narrow stretch is expected to intensify.Under the plan, the carriageway will be widened to between 11 and 14 metres, depending on the availability of land along different sections. Officials said the expansion cannot be uniform due to physical constraints, particularly a 440-kV transmission line running along parts of the stretch, which cannot be shifted. “Wherever space is available, the road will be widened to the maximum feasible limit,” an HSIIDC official said. The project also includes strengthening the drainage network to address recurring waterlogging during the monsoon, construction of footpaths, underground connection of overhead electric cables, and installation of streetlights along the road. The move comes after repeated demands from industrial bodies and stakeholders in Udyog Vihar, who have flagged deteriorating traffic conditions and inadequate infrastructure. Officials said consultations were held with these groups before finalizing the plan. The road upgradation is also critical because of the upcoming mass transit projects in the vicinity. Shankar Chowk is expected to emerge as a major transport hub, with a proposed RRTS station and a metro station likely to come up in the area. The NCRTC station itself will be constructed on HSIIDC land near Shankar Chowk, but the orientation of the entry and exit gates has been changed after concerns were raised about worsening congestion with three high-capacity transit stations planned here.“These developments are expected to increase both vehicular and pedestrian movement, which will further strain the existing road network and cause inconvenience, which is why we are undertaking the service road upgradation,” the official said.
