Varanasi: A 36-year-old businessman was lynched by a mob after his car hit a woman washing utensils along the road in Phulpur area of Varanasi.Police said that around 10.30pm on Sunday, Manish Singh was returning home from his factory. The car went out of control while passing through a road in Ghamhapur village road and hit a woman who was washing utensils on the roadside. She suffered injuries. Manish came out of his car to check on her.Soon, local villagers and the woman’s family members surrounded Manish and started assaulting him with sticks and bricks. Manish suffered critical injuries and was left to die, said police. On getting information, Manish’s family members rushed to the spot and took him to BHU trauma center where he was declared dead.On the complaint by Manish’s uncle, police lodged an FIR against eight identified and seven unidentified persons. Two accused were arrested on Monday while 11 persons have been detained for questioning.Manish is survived by his wife and three children.Manish’s family members protested in the village on Monday and refused to perform his last rites until all accused were arrested. The protest was called off after DCP, Gomti zone, Neetu Kadian, and ACP Atul Anjan Tripathi assured the protesters that the guilty would not be spared. Manish’s last rites were done in the evening.In view of the prevailing tension, police and PAC have been deployed in Ghamhapur village. Senior police officers are camping in the village while police also conducted a foot march to maintain law and order.
