Why is Mahasrashtra Day celebrated?
After India’s independence, the States Reorganization Act of 1956 grouped provinces and princely states into the Union of India based on languages. However, Bombay comprised of numerous linguistic groups with diverse languages including Marathi, Konkani, Gujarati and Kutchi speakers, making the grouping difficult. In response, a regional movement known as the Samyukta Maharashtra Andolan began agitation and protests, demanding a separate Marathi-speaking state. Thus on May 1, 1960, the Bombay Reorganization Act came into effect, creation Maharashtra following many protests and demonstration in support of the move. Thus, erstwhile Bombay was dismantled to create two new states: Maharashtra for the Marathi-speaking people and Gujarat for those whose mother tongue is Gujarati. Over the years, Maharashtra Day has come to celebrate the unique linguistic and cultural identity of the Marathi people, honoring the sacrifices of those involved in the Samyukta Maharashtra Movement. It hails Maharashtra’s contribution to the Indian economy while also appreciating the unity, resilience and preservation of Marathi heritage.
