Despite the reduced number, both runners carry hopes of ending a long drought for gray horses in the Derby.Gray horses haven’t had much success in this famous race over the years. The last time a gray horse won the Kentucky Derby was in 2005, when Giacomo took the title. Since then, a few gray horses have tried their luck, but none have managed to win.The closest they came in recent times was in 2021, when Essential Quality finished among the top runners, but still couldn’t take first place. Overall, only eight gray horses have ever won the Kentucky Derby, which shows how rare it is. This shows how rare such victories are in the sport. Names like Monarchos, Silver Charm, and Winning Colors remain part of that exclusive list.The race is expected to begin around 6:57 pm ET on May 2, Saturday, although timings may slightly vary due to pre-race ceremonies.
