Actor Amal Sehrawat started his film career with Ram Gopal Varma’s Satya 2 and earned a lot of critical praise for his strong and organic performance.Sharing more on his acting technique Amal says,”The beauty of acting lies in the fact that there is no fixed recipe to it—and that’s also what makes it challenging. While there are structured approaches like method acting, I believe the foundation begins with understanding the world of the story and researching the character’s backstory. This process gives insights into the character’s physicality, psychology, socio-economic background, and emotional state across different phases of the narrative. However, filmmaking is a deeply collaborative process. It requires the actor, director, and writer to align, even though they may not always follow the same technique.” He adds,”That’s why I feel it’s essential for an actor to train in multiple approaches, allowing adaptability. But ultimately, after all the preparation, one must let go and respond truthfully to the moment—drawing from the energy of co-actors and the environment on set.”But how has his process evolved over the years? “As a young adult , I was deeply influenced by legends like Amitabh Bachchan Sir and Sanjay Dutt Sir . I would often imitate them and found great satisfaction in doing so. However, when I decided to pursue acting professionally, I realized the importance of formal training. I began my journey with Kreating Charakters in Mumbai, where my mentors Rupesh Sir And Samar Sir introduced me to the technical aspects—diction, character development, and understanding the camera. Over time, I discovered that acting is essentially a journey of self-discovery. Training is not a one-time process; it’s continuous. Much like Mobile Phones needs updates, an actor also needs constant updates. Later, training under Atul Mongia Sir helped me integrate meditation into my craft. This not only added depth to my performances but also made me more aware as a human being. Since then, meditation has become an integral part of my life, and I continue to attend workshops whenever I’m not shooting.”For Amal acting is a holistic process where all these elements coexist. He feels formal preparation acts as a roadmap—it provides structure and clarity.He adds,”For any character personal interpretation adds individuality to the character. And when an actor remains open to instinct and intuition, that’s where the real magic happens—moments that are unplanned, organic, and often surprising even to the actor. In my career I’ve explored various acting techniques and realized that their core remains the same: to behave truthfully under imaginary circumstances created by the writer. Two aspects consistently anchor my performance: the character’s backstory and their interpersonal relationships within the script. These elements bring authenticity and emotional depth to any role.”Amal shares in his career one thing he has consciously avoided is over preparing. He prefers to stay flexible and open to change. He says,”Once I’m on set, my preparation takes a backseat, and I surrender to the director’s vision. The director has the most complete understanding of the script, its tone, and its emotional rhythm. Trusting that vision allows me to adapt seamlessly across genres while still staying true to the character.“
