Rory McIlroy did not plan to step into a movie. But one simple comment changed that. The golfer ended up making a cameo in The Devil Wears Prada 2, and it all started with what he said during a press talk. Director David Frankel heard it, remembered it, and turned it into a real moment on screen. At the European premiere in London, Frankel shared how excited he was to have McIlroy in the film. He said, “I mean I loved having Rory McIlroy. He was a great sport. A very good actor.”This was not planned like a normal casting decision. It came from something natural. Last year, before winning a big tournament, McIlroy spoke about how he relaxed. That honest answer made the director see him as a perfect fit. The story connects sport and film in a very simple way. A golfer watched a movie to calm himself. Then the same movie gave him a small role in its sequel. That is what makes this moment stand out.

Rory McIlroy’s Players Championship comment leads to The Devil Wears Prada 2 cameo and Hollywood appearance

The full story goes back to the The Players Championship in 2025. Just before the final round, McIlroy was asked what he did to relax. His answer was simple and honest. He said he watched The Devil Wears Prada. David Frankel explained how that moment stayed with him. He said, “You know it was triggered because last year, right before he won the Players Championship, the press asked him what he did to relax the night before he won the tournament, and he said he watched The Devil Wears Prada. I knew we had a fan.” McIlroy went on to win the tournament in March 2025. He defeated JJ Spaun in a three hole playoff. After the win, he shared more about that night.“I needed to reset,” McIlroy said. “Once I got back to the hotel, I just tried to sort of forget about it and had some room service, watched a little bit of Devil Wears Prada and went to bed. That was basically it.” He also spoke about how nervous he felt before the final day. “Then when I woke up this morning, I woke up at 3:00 this morning and couldn’t get back to sleep, so I was, I was as nervous as I can remember.”That real moment is what connected him to the film. It was not about acting skills first. It was about a genuine link to the story. McIlroy was not the only sports name in the sequel. Karl-Anthony Towns also appears in the film. Along with them, the movie includes well-known names like Ciara, Jon Batiste, Donatella Versace, Heidi Klum, and Winnie Harlow. This is not the first time McIlroy has stepped into entertainment. He also had a small role in Happy Gilmore 2, released in July 2025. But even after being part of it, he said he had not watched the movie right away.“I haven’t even watched the movie yet, because I don’t want to see myself trying to act,” he told Kate Mackz. “I am going to try and watch it this week maybe but it was an amazing experience.” He also spoke about working with Adam Sandler. “Adam Sandler is the best, he’s such a nice guy. He made us feel so comfortable but I’m not going to give up my day job anytime soon.”McIlroy made it clear that golf is still his main focus. At the same time, he enjoyed being around people from a different field. He said it was special to spend time with those who are at the top of their work, whether in sports or acting. This whole story shows how one honest answer can lead to something unexpected. A quiet night before a big win turned into a moment in a major film.
