Alessandro Nannini, better known as Sandro Nannini, is a former Italian Formula One driver who raced in F1 from 1986 to 1990. He is best remembered for winning the 1989 Japanese Grand Prix for Benetton after the famous collision between Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost at Suzuka. Although his Formula One career ended early after a helicopter accident, Nannini later returned to racing and also built a successful family business in Italy.

Nannini was born on July 7, 1959, in Siena. He started racing in rally events with a Lancia Stratos before moving into open-wheel racing in 1981. Soon after, he joined Minardi in Formula Two and stayed with the team for three seasons.Even though Minardi did not have the fastest cars, Nannini impressed many people in racing with his speed and driving style. He also raced in sports cars for Lancia and won the 1984 1000 km of Kyalami with Riccardo Patrese. The biggest moment of Nannini’s Formula One career came at the 1989 Japanese Grand Prix at Suzuka Circuit.Starting third on the grid, Nannini was behind the McLaren drivers, Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost. On lap 47, the two title rivals crashed into each other at the chicane.Prost retired immediately, while Senna returned to the race after receiving a push-start and changing his damaged front wing. Senna crossed the finish line first, but race officials later disqualified him for cutting the chicane after the crash. That decision handed the race victory to Nannini.It became his only Formula One win. He later added more podium finishes in 1990 while racing alongside three-time world champion Nelson Piquet at Benetton.
Alessandro Nannini’s Formula One career ended after helicopter accident
In October 1990, only days after finishing third at the Spanish Grand Prix, Nannini was involved in a helicopter crash at his vineyard near Siena. The accident severed his right forearm and suddenly ended his Formula One career.Doctors successfully reattached his arm through microsurgery, and Nannini later returned to motorsport. He competed in touring car racing with Alfa Romeo in the Deutsche Tourenwagen Meisterschaft and the International Touring Car Championship during the 1990s.He also raced for Mercedes in the 1997 FIA GT Championship before retiring from professional racing.
