BJYM worker shot at, accused held

Lucknow: A Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) worker was allegedly shot and injured by a fellow member in the Mehndiganj area under Bazarkhala police station limits on Saturday night, police said. The injured, identified as 35-year-old Shyam Chetan Tiwari, a resident of Mehndiganj who runs a photography studio in the Bazarkhala area, sustained a gunshot injury near the hip joint. He was rushed to the Trauma Centre, where he is undergoing treatment.Deputy commissioner of police (west zone) Kamlesh Dixit said CCTV footage from the locality was examined, leading to the identification of the accused as 25‑year‑old Vaibhav Bajpai, also a resident of the same area and allegedly linked to the BJYM.“Based on CCTV footage and local inputs, the accused has been detained and is being questioned to ascertain the motive,” the DCP said.Police sources said preliminary findings suggest the incident stemmed from an ongoing dispute between the two men over the installation of political hoardings in the area. The firearm used in the incident was found to be illegal and has been seized, police added.Following the incident, BJYM workers along with locals demanded strict action against the accused. A large police force was deployed in the area as a precautionary measure to maintain law and order and prevent any escalation.
