Ranchi: A large group of students under the banner of National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) staged a silent protest at Doranda College in the city, affiliated to Ranchi University, on Tuesday, demanding the appointment of teachers, conduct of students’ body election, improved sanitation and other facilities in the institution.The protesters stated that the students’ body election has not taken place since 2019, even though fee is being taken for the same. They demanded that its funds should be spent in a transparent manner and its account be made public.NSUI’s Ranchi University vice president Vishwajit Singh said, “While there are 16,500 students in the college, the number of teaching and non-teaching staff are 100 and 50 respectively. The ideal teacher-student ratio should be around 1:40.”A first semester student, Rashmi Rani, raised the issue of hygiene in the campus. “The state of hygiene in the college campus is below standard. The female washroom has transparent glass on windows. There is no arrangement for sanitary pads,” she said.The students also stated that due to inadequate drinking water arrangement, they often have to purchase it from outside during the ongoing summer season. They pointed out that lack of common room and canteen led to difficulties for students, particularly those coming from far-off places to the college.College principal Raj Kumar Sharma said, “Several demands of the students, including union election, can be handled only at the university level. The college-level issues, including that of girls’ washroom, would be addressed.”
