Kanpur woman tries to end life as choked sewer complaints fall on deaf ears

Kanpur: Frustrated over a choked sewer line for more than a year, a 35-year-old woman from Chakeri tried to commit suicide by jumping from the roof of her house on Friday. Police intervened and brought her down after assuring her of appropriate action. Following the intervention and the matter gaining traction, the jalkal department began the cleaning work on Friday night. The woman alleged that despite repeated complaints, she had received only assurances. She alleged that persistent civic neglect left her family living amid overflowing sewage and without street lighting for over a year. The woman said the sewer line outside her house has been choked since Nov 2025. Dirty water backed up into her residence and neighboring houses, while stagnant water collected on the road as the drain continued to overflow. Despite repeated complaints to officials over the past year, she said she received only assurances and no concrete action. Frustrated by the lack of response, she said she tried to take the extreme step.JE Pradeep Maurya said the pipe had been laid outside the house and the sewer issue would now be fully resolved. To prevent further escalation, sewer cleaning began late Friday night, with Jalkal workers arriving with a vehicle to clear the choked line.
