KGMU issues notice over defunct lithotripsy machine

Lucknow: KGMU on Tuesday issued a notice to a private agency over a lithotripsy machine for non-surgical treatment of kidney stones that has remained non-functional for the past one-and-a-half months.Every month around 20 patients come for kidney stone treatment, but they are being asked to wait or opt for invasive procedures. With the machine down, doctors are using other procedures. These include laser treatment through a small tube and another procedure where a small cut is made to remove the stone. These treatment options work, but they are complex and involve longer recovery.Officials said the machine needs a specialized part from Germany. “It usually takes two to six weeks to arrive, but the delay has gone beyond this period this time,” they said.KGMU spokesperson Prof KK Singh said the machine will be repaired soon.
