KGMU runs low on A and AB positive blood, urges immediate donations

Lucknow: KGMU continues to face a shortage of A and AB-positive blood groups, with the current stock likely to last only for a day without fresh donations. The shortage started about a month ago. It was briefly eased after donation camps were held, but has surfaced again. For A-positive, about 200 units are available against a required buffer of 300. With daily use of over 150 units, the stock may last just one to one-and-a-half days. The situation is worse for AB-positive. Only around 60 units are available against a need of 100-120.The shortage is impacting high-demand areas such as the trauma center and Queen Mary’s Hospital the most.Patients needing regular transfusions, including those with haemophilia, will also be affected if stocks are not replenished.Prof Tulika Chandra, head of the department of transfusion medicine, said donation drives are being stepped up.“We are appealing to people with A and AB-positive blood groups to come for donation,” she said.
