Luka Doncic will not suit up for Game 2 on Thursday night, leaving the Lakers once again searching for answers against a Thunder team that already seized early control of the Western Conference semifinal series. After missing more than a month with a Grade 2 left hamstring strain, Doncic officially remains sidelined as Los Angeles tries to avoid falling into a dangerous 2-0 hole in Oklahoma City. The update itself was not surprising. Doncic’s own comments earlier this week painted a cautious picture of where his recovery stands. He admitted the original MRI projected an eight-week timeline, and while progress is happening gradually, the explosive movements required for playoff basketball still appear far away. Also, rushing Doncic back simply is not an option the Lakers are comfortable taking.

Luka Doncic has not played since April 2, when he suffered the injury during a blowout loss against the same Thunder squad now standing between the Lakers and a trip to the Western Conference Finals. Since then, the recovery process has remained deliberate. The Slovenian star also traveled to Spain for platelet-rich plasma treatment in an effort to speed up healing.Despite visible progress in shooting drills and light movement work, Doncic has not resumed full-contact basketball activities. Multiple reports continue to describe his rehab as a slow and cautious process. Even optimistic projections place a possible return closer to Game 4, assuming there are no setbacks. That reality has shifted the pressure directly onto the Lakers’ remaining core.

Lakers without Luka Doncic

Game 1 exposed just how difficult this matchup becomes without Doncic orchestrating the offense. Oklahoma City pulled away late for a 108–90 victory despite an unusually quiet night from Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, who finished with only 18 points and seven turnovers.Without Doncic controlling tempo and creating mismatches, the Thunder defense aggressively crowded LeBron James and Austin Reaves. Reaves managed just eight points, while Los Angeles struggled to generate clean looks once Oklahoma City tightened defensively in the second half. The Lakers still have enough experience to keep games competitive, especially with James carrying heavier offensive responsibilities. But without Doncic’s shot creation and playmaking, every possession becomes more difficult against a younger, deeper and more athletic Thunder roster. For now, Los Angeles has little choice except patience. Hamstring injuries rarely reward impatience, especially in the playoffs. Till Doncic returns, the Lakers need to stay in the series.
