Not long into the trip, dozens started showing textbook norovirus symptoms: violent vomiting, diarrhea, cramps, and nausea. The CDC’s Vessel Sanitation Program says 102 out of 3,116 passengers, plus 13 crew, got sick. Lab tests confirmed norovirus.The Caribbean Princess was touring its way through tropical stops, due back in Florida at Port Canaveral on May 11.Princess Cruises put out a statement claiming only a “limited number” of people had mild symptoms, but they backed that up with a full-court press of deep cleaning and tighter protocols. “We quickly disinfected every area of the ship and added extra sanitizing throughout the voyage,” the line said. They also promised another round of top-to-bottom cleaning once the ship got home.

Some passengers played it safe, choosing to stay in their cabins after news of the outbreak spread. While no one has died or faced serious complications this time, health officials warn that norovirus can be more serious for older travelers, kids, or anyone with a weaker immune system because of dehydration from vomiting and diarrhea.For now, the Caribbean Princess will finish its scheduled cruise, then get another deep clean when it returns to Florida.
