Shyamla Hills sees rising encroachments near Upper Lake

Bhopal: Encroachment has been steadily surfacing over the past three months in Shyamla Hills, a zone regarded as part of the city’s VVIP area, sparking widespread concern. Semi-permanent structures are gradually being reinforced with cement, edging closer to permanence along the Upper Lake side of the road.Unauthorized constructions have appeared adjacent to a hotel that is soon to be leased, despite the presence of three BMC offices and a police station on the same stretch. The situation has raised serious questions about enforcement and oversight in one of Bhopal’s most sensitive locations.Locals allege that authorities are reluctant to intervene, leaving violations unchecked. “It is surprising that such activity is happening right next to the BMC office,” a resident remarked, pointing to the proximity of government institutions. Urban planners warn that unchecked encroachment in high-security zones undermines governance. “If rules can be flouted here, it sets a precedent for violations elsewhere,” a central government employee observed, requesting anonymity. The issue has now drawn wider attention, with civic voices demanding immediate action to restore accountability. As the hotel prepares for lease, the fate of the adjoining structures remains uncertain. When contacted, the BMC zone officer did not respond.
