A man in his 30s was taken to hospital on Thursday afternoon after a corrosive substance was thrown at him outside a McDonald’s restaurant on Warrington Road in Ashton-under-Lyne in Greater Manchester. Two men, one in his 40s and one in his 50s, were arrested on suspicion of assault and remained in custody. The incident triggered a hazmat response with specialist officers from the fire service attending the scene alongside police and ambulance crews.Greater Manchester Police told Metro that emergency services were called to the business premises at around 4pm following reports of a hazmat incident. The force confirmed the injured man had been taken to hospital and was being treated for injuries that were not deemed life threatening or life changing. Police said a scene remained in place at the location and that there was no believed risk to the wider public.Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue confirmed that two fire crews attended the incident in addition to the hazmat specialists.The attack unfolded in a town center location on a busy shopping afternoon in front of members of the public going about their day. Witnesses described the high street being swarmed with emergency vehicles in the aftermath. The presence of hazmat officers reflects standard procedure when a corrosive substance has been used in a public space as the priority is to contain any ongoing risk and treat the victim as quickly as possible.Acid and corrosive substance attacks have remained a serious concern across parts of England in recent years. In October last year two boys were hospitalized after a corrosive liquid was thrown at them during a fight on Walthamstow High Street in east London. Emergency services determined the substance used was a corrosive chemical. Both boys were treated for injuries that were not life threatening.The use of corrosive substances as weapons is treated with particular gravity by police and prosecutors in England. Offenders convicted of such attacks face lengthy custodial sentences and the injuries inflicted are frequently permanent.
