Agra: Two engineering students of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) were arrested and sent to jail in Aligarh for allegedly addressing the university as “mini Pakistan” and threatening a 25-year-old doctor who was visiting the varsity’s campus to meet a female friend.The incident took place on April 14 and came to light after the students were held on Sunday. According to police, after meeting the friend, who is also an engineering student at AMU, when Dr Kulwant Singh was about to leave the campus, he was “suddenly surrounded by a group of men”.In his police complaint, Singh alleged that four men, including arrested accused Shahbaz Haq, 22, a 1st-year BTech student, and Nazeem Khan, 25, a final-year MTech student, started “abusing him and made communal remarks”. The FIR stated that seeing himself surrounded, Singh immediately dialed ‘112’ and sought police help.The university’s proctorial team then arrived and took Singh to the proctor’s office. Cops arrived too, and after a routine investigation, escorted Singh out of the university premises. The accused students had left by then.An FIR was subsequently registered under BNS sections 126 (2) (wrongful restraint), 191 (2) (rioting) and 351 (2) (criminal intimidation) at Aligarh’s Civil Lines police station on April 17.speaking with TOI on Monday, AMU proctor prof Mohammed Naved Khan said, “Two students of AMU are currently in police custody. We’ll summon them and seek a formal explanation once they get bail. Based on their response, we’ll decide our future course of action in this matter.”Aligarh SP (city) Aditya Bansal said, “The accused were identified with the help of CCTV footage. According to the complainant, they had misbehaved with him and made some provocative remarks. Efforts are now on to identify others.”
