Gurgaon: The traffic police have issued challans to 817 auto-rickshaw, e-rickshaw and taxi drivers for operating without the prescribed uniform, imposing fines totaling Rs 6,36,500 during a special enforcement drive conducted between April 10 and April 20.Officials said the campaign was aimed at improving compliance among commercial vehicle drivers and bringing greater discipline to public transport operations in the city, adding that despite repeated awareness campaigns, many drivers continued to ply without the mandatory gray uniform, prompting stricter enforcement.“The uniform requirement is aimed at ensuring easy identification of authorized drivers, enhancing passenger safety and promoting accountability. Compliance with such norms is a key component of maintaining an organized and reliable public transport system,” an officer said. The traffic police also launched a drive against illegally parked vehicles from April 12 to April 19. During this period, 480 vehicles were towed using cranes and challenged for violating parking rules across roads, at major intersections, and in public places.Officials said illegal parking is a major contributor to congestion, particularly during peak hours, and that removing such vehicles is intended to reduce bottlenecks and improve traffic flow.Deputy commissioner of police (traffic) Prateek Gahlot said the drives will continue in the coming days. He urged commercial vehicle drivers to follow uniform norms and appealed to residents to comply with traffic regulations, emphasizing that collective adherence is essential for safer and more efficient roads.Officials said traffic personnel have also been sensitizing drivers on various aspects of road safety and responsible conduct, including courteous behavior towards passengers, adherence to speed limits, avoiding mobile phone use while driving and refraining from intoxicants. Awareness is also being spread about emergency response services, including Dial 112 and helpline number 1095, to ensure better public outreach and quicker assistance in case of emergencies.
