Jaipur: The Jaipur Development Authority (JDA) has proposed a twin plan to improve traffic flow on Sahakar Marg, one of the city’s busiest stretches that faces regular congestion during peak hours. The proposal focuses on easing movement between Bais Godam and JP Phatak while addressing unused road space on the opposite side.Under the plan, the Bais Godam-bound flank of Sahakar Marg up to the JP Phatak underpass would be widened into a three-lane corridor. At the same time, the Tonk Road-bound flank would be reduced to a single lane. Officials say this change is aimed at balancing road usage, as the Tonk Road-bound side has seen lower traffic after the construction of the Laxmi Mandir Tiraha underpass and the conversion of the Laxmi Mandir Tiraha into a signal-free intersection.According to JDA officials, the stretch between JP Phatak and Laxmi Mandir Tiraha on the Tonk Road-bound side is now largely underutilized. This has led to gradual encroachment by thelawalas from the nearby Lal Kothi Sabji Mandi.In contrast, the Bais Godam-bound side often witnesses severe traffic jams. A major reason is vehicles coming from Bais Godam taking a U-turn from the cut near Sarovar Hotel to access the JP Phatak underpass, creating bottlenecks during rush hours.“To tackle this, it has been proposed to shift the divider between Laxmi Mandir Tiraha and JP Phatak. It also plans to close the road cut in front of the Sarovar Hotel. In place of the existing cut, a dedicated U-turn bay would be built at the Tonk Road end of the Sahakar Marg,” stated an official.The proposal is currently under consideration and will require approval through multiple meetings, including the key Traffic Control Board meeting of JDA.
