'No point in coming clean-shaven and saying I'm a college boy': Basil Joseph opens up about 'Athiradi' roleThe upcoming multi-starrer is directed by debutant filmmaker Arun Anirudhan, while Riya Shibu appears as Basil’s female lead. In the film, Basil plays a college student named Sam Boy.Basil Joseph has now opened up about the intense physical transformation he underwent for Athiradi.Basil Joseph about his transformationDuring an interview with Cue Studio, the actor revealed that he lost 15 kilos to convincingly portray the younger character on screen.Speaking about the effort he invested for the role, Basil said he understood the importance of the character and the expectations surrounding the film right from the beginning.“After ‘Maranamass’, the next main lead release is ‘Athiradi’. ‘Maranamass’ released last April, so it has been almost a year. When I came into this film, I clearly understood the impact that role and character work would create. I also decided to become one of the producers of the film. As an actor, I have now reached a stage where I cannot step back after films like ‘Ponman’ and ‘Sookshmadarshini’. People have expectations now, so I need to work harder to make the character better. There is no space to move backward from this point. That responsibility is also there.”The actor also admitted that portraying a believable college student at this stage of his life required much more than cosmetic changes.“When you say it is a college character, obviously I am not of college-going age anymore. I have a wife and a child. Everyone knows that. There is no point in just coming clean-shaven and saying I’m a college boy. Everything else can probably be achieved with money, but for the body, you have to put in the work yourself.”Basil Joseph followed strict fitness routineBasil further revealed that he completely dedicated himself to the project for several months. According to the actor, he avoided taking up other acting commitments while preparing for the film.“Other than investing a lot of time, there is no other option. For this film, I reached a phase where I wasn’t doing anything else, including acting in other projects.”The actor added that he underwent a demanding routine involving fasting and daily workouts for nearly ten months.“For nearly ten months, I followed fasting and daily workouts for one to two hours just for this film. I put in an extreme level of effort. When the trial look was locked and everyone said I looked like a college student, I felt very happy.”Basil Joseph says transformation boosted his confidenceBasil shared that the response to his transformed look gave him confidence and made him feel that his hard work had paid off.“It gave me confidence that all the hard work had achieved something. My pant size is now 28; earlier it was 34. Overall, I lost 15 kilos. My current weight is 60 kilos.”The actor also said the film demanded a major portion of his personal life and time.“For this movie, I dedicated almost two years of my life completely,” said Basil.‘Athiradi’ release dateAccording to IANS, ‘Athiradi’ has now been cleared for screening and has a runtime of two hours and 37 minutes. The makers had earlier confirmed that the film will hit theaters on May 14 this year.
