Guwahati: Women representation in the next assembly will remain unchanged at seven, mirroring the previous strength in the House. Altogether 59 women candidates were in fray this time against 81 in 2021.In the 2021 assembly elections, three of the seven women candidates fielded by BJP secured victory, while two from Congress managed to win out of the nine the party had fielded. By contrast, BJP ally AGP recorded a 100% strike rate, with both of its two women candidates emerging winners.This year, the BJP improved its performance, with four of its six women candidates winning their respective seats. The Congress managed just one winner from among the 13 it had fielded. Meanwhile, both BJP allies — AGP and BPF — saw their lone woman candidate registering victories.BJP candidate Ajanta Neog, who won the 2021 polls, emerged victorious this time as well. However, Nandita Gorlosa, who won the last election on a BJP ticket and had also become a cabinet minister, lost her seat after switching over to Congress.Besides Neog, BJP women candidates Nilima Devi secured victory in Mangaldai constituency defeating Congress’s Rijumoni Talukdar, Niso Terangpi defeated Independent candidate JI Kathar in Diphu and the party’s youngster and first-timer Rupali Langthasa defeated NPP candidate Daniel Langthasa in Haflong.AGP candidate Diptimoyee Choudhury retained the Bongaigaon seat, defeating Congress candidate Girish Baruah.Congress candidate Baby Begum won the Dhubri seat defeating AIUDF candidate Nazrul Hoque. The party’s remaining 12 women candidates lost.In 2021, Congress candidate Sibamoni Bora had won the erstwhile Batadraba constituency while Nandita Das won the erstwhile Boko constituency. This time, Nandita lost to AGP’s Prakash Chandra Das by a margin of just over 700 votes.BPF candidate Sewli Mohilary, wife of party chief Hagrama Mohilary, emerged victorious in Kokrajhar constituency, defeating UPPL candidate Lawrence Islary.
