Banksy appears to have unveiled a new artwork in central London overnight. A large resin statue showed up on a plinth in Waterloo Place early Wednesday, close to statues of Florence Nightingale and Edward VII and near several major government buildings and embassies. There was no public notice or permission and by morning the piece was already drawing attention.According to the BBC, the statue shows a suited man stepping forward off a plinth with a flag covering his face. He looks confident, but he cannot see where he is going. The message is direct and appears intended to be taken that way.Banksy posted a video to Instagram on Thursday showing glimpses of how the installation was carried out. The footage shows yellow traffic cones marking off the area, a large vehicle pulling up, lorry-load stabilizers being deployed and a figure in an orange hi-viz vest directing the operation. The statue was lifted into position using a hook and the entire operation appeared to take only a matter of minutes.James Peak, creator of the BBC podcast series The Banksy Story, told the BBC the team behind the installation operates at a level most people would not expect from a street art crew. He described them as the sort of people who could set up a Metallica concert in 24 hours: organized, professional and clearly experienced at working quickly and quietly in urban environments. Peak said they had almost certainly surveyed the location in advance and timed the operation for the quietest possible window in the middle of the night.Westminster City Council confirmed to the BBC it had not granted permission for the installation because it received no advance notice. Despite that the council’s response was notably warm. A spokesperson said the council was excited to see Banksy’s latest sculpture in Westminster and described it as a striking addition to the city’s public art scene. Safety barriers have since been erected around the statue and the council said it will remain accessible for the public to view while its options are considered.James Peak described the work as capturing a very precise moment in time in a way that most statues never manage. He said the image of a flag-blinded leader about to step off a precipice was a sharp commentary on what he called strong leadership and martial sentiment and suggested Banksy was questioning whether that kind of posturing leads anywhere useful at all.The location adds a further layer of meaning. Waterloo Place sits at the center of British institutional power. It is surrounded by embassies, private members’ clubs and the architecture of government. Placing a statue of a blindfolded authority figure in that specific setting is a deliberate choice rather than an accident of logistics.The statue is large enough that theft is considered unlikely although Banksy’s work has been stolen before. In 2004 an earlier piece called The Drinker was removed from Shaftesbury Avenue and was not recovered for a decade. This new work will remain in place for now and London appears to be enjoying it.
