Varun Vummadi, co-founder and CEO of Giga, began his journey in a very simple way. At first, I just wanted to start a company with my best friend.”What started in 2023 as a dorm room idea slowly turned into a startup building voice-based AI agents for businesses. Before starting the company, Vummadi made two major decisions that changed his path. He turned down a job offer worth $525,000 from a high-frequency trading fund. He also decided not to pursue a PhD at Stanford, according to the report.At a startup event in Bengaluru, it was shared that his parents were not supportive at first. It took time for them to understand his decision to choose entrepreneurship over a stable career path.

Early background and learning journey

At the Startup School India event in Bengaluru, Y Combinator partner Jared Friedman spoke about Vummadi’s background. He said Vummadi comes from a “poor background” and had earned over $100,000 through Kaggle competitions before starting Giga.These early experiences helped him build confidence and skills before moving into the startup world.

Funding growth and startup expansion

After joining Y Combinator, Giga moved ahead with strong progress. As mentioned in the Hindustan Times report, the company later raised $61 million in a Series A funding round led by Redpoint Ventures.This funding helped the startup gain attention in the AI ​​space. Jared Friedman also described Giga as one of the “first great AI companies to come out of India”.

Allegations that surfaced later

Along with its growth, the company also faced controversy. A former employee made several allegations in a social media post, as mentioned in the report.He claimed that internal dashboards showed lower revenue than what was shared with him. He also raised concerns about his role, pay, and long working hours. On December 15, he also claimed that a group of former employees and contractors had shared 70 GB of data with him, which he said contained evidence of wrongdoing.

Company response and denial

Giga denied all allegations. According to the report, in a statement released on December 25, the company said, “A small group of individuals has illegally obtained confidential company information and is now attempting to extort and blackmail Giga,”“They are threatening to take snippets of this data, manipulate it out of context, and release it to the public with some wildly false and defamatory allegations unless we wire $3M to an anonymous crypto account.”The company also said that law enforcement has been informed and legal action will be taken.

Support from Y combinator partner
