This day will mark Mahatma Buddha’s 2588th birth anniversary. The day is observed on Purnima tithi of shukla paksha in the month of Vaishakha. This year, the birth anniversary of Lord Buddha will be celebrated on May 1, 2026.

Buddha Purnima 2026: History

The ancient texts state that Lord Buddha was born as a prince named Siddhartha, who was always surrounded by luxuries and worldly delights. His mother was a Koliyan princess, while his father, Suddhodana, was the leader of the Shakya tribe. He was kept indoors to prevent him from being influenced toward a religious life because it was predicted at birth that he would become a powerful emperor. Once he saw a dead, an elderly man, and a sick man and he became unhappy while seeing them suffering. At the age of 29, he left home in pursuit of solutions because he was driven to discover the causes of a man’s misery. He sought enlightenment by sitting under a banyan tree and engaging in intense meditation. At the age of 35, he woke up with all the answers and was known as Mahatma Buddha. He urged people to follow a spiritual path, imparted the lessons, and raised awareness of spirituality.

Buddha Purnima 2026: Significance

Buddha Purnima has an immense religious significance according to Hindu scriptures. Gautam Buddha was born on one of the most auspicious days. It will be Lord Buddha’s 2588th birthday. The devotees of Gautam Buddha commemorate this day with great grandeur and enthusiasm. He is believed to have been Lord Vishnu’s ninth avatar. All the Buddhist community celebrate the most auspicious day.Between 563 and 483 BCE, Gautama Buddha is believed to have been born at Lumbini, Nepal. He was born to Queen Maya Devi and his father was King Suddhodana. The Mayadevi Temple in Lumbini marks the site of Buddha’s birth. The precise date of his passing is unknown.Vesak is also observed on this day. On this auspicious day, he also became spiritually enlightened beneath the Bodhi Tree in Bodh Gaya. These three locations are regarded as important pilgrimage sites for Lord Buddha’s devotees since he taught about the dharma while sitting beneath the Bodhi tree in Sarnath and left his body in Khushinagar. In order to obtain Lord Buddha’s blessings, a large number of devotees and Buddha followers travel to Bodh Gaya.
