Chelsea winger Mykhailo Mudryk has been handed a four-year ban after testing positive for a banned substance, but the Ukraine international is fighting to clear his name. The Football Association (FA) imposed the suspension after an investigation into a failed drugs test from December 2024. The substance found in his urine sample was meldonium, which is banned in professional sport. Mudryk has denied knowingly taking the substance and is now appealing the decision through the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). The 25-year-old has stayed away from competitive football since his provisional suspension and has been training alone while waiting for the final outcome. His goal is either to have the ban completely removed or at least reduced. The case has become one of the biggest off-field stories around Chelsea, especially because Mudryk has not played for the club since November 2024. His last match came in the UEFA Conference League against 1. FC Heidenheim. Since then, his future at Stamford Bridge has remained uncertain.

Mudryk has hired Morgan Sports Law, the same legal team that helped Paul Pogba during his own doping case, to handle his appeal. A final hearing date has not yet been confirmed. Until then, the Chelsea winger continues training individually, including renting the pitch at Uxbridge FC to stay fit.The winger joined Chelsea from FC Shakhtar Donetsk in 2023 in a deal worth up to £88 million. A large part of that transfer fee included performance-based bonuses, and his suspension has now created financial problems for his former club.Shakhtar CEO Serhii Palkin spoke about the issue in an interview with journalist Ben Jacobs. He said, “We have €30 million (£26 million) of bonuses in his contract. If he is not playing, or Chelsea are not reaching results, we are losing €30 million. That is a big financial impact for us.”He also added, “I know Mudryk as a player and a person. I believe he will return and start playing again. Everybody is waiting for the court’s decision, and we do not have any information about when this will take place and when the final decision will be issued.” For now, Mudryk’s career remains on hold as he waits for the next step in one of football’s biggest doping cases.
