Gurgaon: Haryana CM Nayab Singh Saini on Thursday called for a special two-week sanitation drive in the city starting May 1. The drive will be carried out in the areas under the MCG.The CM, who urged ward committees to “actively cooperate” in improving cleanliness across the city, made the announcement during a virtual interaction with ward committee members from urban local bodies across the state, MCG and the municipalities of Sohna, Pataudi-Jatauli Mandi and Farrukhnagar. The interaction — held at Gurugram University in Sector 51 and presided over by city mayor Raj Rani Malhotra — was attended by councillors, officials and representatives of ward committees. The chief minister’s call comes amid a broader push to enhance urban sanitation and citizen participation, with ward committees expected to play a frontline role in overseeing waste collection, segregation and awareness efforts during the campaign.Malhotra said, “The campaign would involve active participation from ward committees at the grassroots level.” She described these committees as a key link between citizens and the civic body, adding that their involvement would be crucial to the success of the cleanliness initiative.MCG commissioner Pradeep Dahiya also emphasized the importance of ward committees in strengthening sanitation monitoring and improving service delivery at the local level.Officials said ward committees, constituted under the Haryana Municipality Citizen Participation Act, 2008, are increasingly being positioned as a bridge between residents and the administration, helping identify local issues, monitor civic services and ensure accountability in areas such as sanitation, drainage and road maintenance. The MCG officials said that at the ward level, these committees not only identify local problems but also ensure active participation in their resolution. This strengthens development works at the grassroots level and makes service delivery more transparent and effective.
