NEW DELHI: India U-17 football team have received a significant boost in their bid to qualify for the FIFA U-17 World Cup 2026 following the sudden withdrawal of DPR Korea U-17 team from the AFC U-17 Asian Cup 2026.Originally drawn in a challenging Group D alongside defending champions Uzbekistan, Australia and DPR Korea, India now find themselves in a three-team group — dramatically improving their qualification prospects.Group reshaped, qualification path clearerThe tournament, set to be held in Saudi Arabia from May 5 to 22, will see the top two teams from each group advance to the quarter-finals and secure direct qualification to the World Cup in Qatar. With DPR Korea’s exit and no replacement named, Group D effectively becomes a three-way contest. This means India now need to finish in the top two among just three teams — a far more achievable task compared to the original four-team group.India, who qualified for the tournament by topping their qualifying group ahead of Iran and Lebanon, will now play only two matches — against Australia and Uzbekistan.Scenarios that favor IndiaEven without a win, India can remain in contention. Two draws against Australia and Uzbekistan could take them to two points, leaving qualification dependent on the result between the other two sides.A decisive win in the Australia vs Uzbekistan clash could push one team to the top with four points, opening a pathway for India to finish second. However, a win for India against either opponent would significantly strengthen their chances. A victory would take them to three points, potentially enough to secure a top-two finish depending on other results. The ideal scenario would see India collect four or more points — through a win and a draw — which would almost guarantee qualification for the World Cup.Despite the improved outlook, the challenge remains steep. Uzbekistan entered as defending champions, while Australia qualified impressively through the preliminaries.Still, with reduced competition in the group, India’s path to a historic World Cup berth now looks clearer than ever.
