Google is reportedly planning to introduce changes to Android’s default Messages app. This change is expected to help users more easily identify RCS business messages and reduce confusion caused by promotional spam. The update aims to improve how Rich Communication Services (RCS) business chats appear in the Google Messages app by visually separating them from regular personal chats. The move comes as users in several regions continue to report receiving promotional RCS messages through the platform.
What’s changing in Google Messages
According to a report by Android Authority, recent changes spotted in the Google Messages app beta indicate that business messages sent via RCS for Business will soon display a rounded-square logo instead of the circular icons used for regular personal conversations. The report also shared an early preview of the changes after activating the feature. This visual change will appear across multiple sections of the app, including the conversation list, individual conversation screens, and the conversation details page. Regular chats with personal contacts will continue using circular profile icons. The change could make it easier for users to quickly identify promotional messages and separate them from personal conversations.Google has also updated its verification system for RCS business accounts. Verified business accounts will now display a verification checkmark. The company said the changes were introduced to “enhance user trust” and “Align with Google standards.”Businesses using Rich Business Messaging for updates, offers and customer communication will display the new visual indicators. This could help users identify promotional messages more quickly and delete unwanted chats if needed.Currently, users can tap a shield icon in Google Messages to check whether a business account is verified. That shield icon also currently informs users that these conversations are not end-to-end encrypted.According to reports, Google plans to remove that shield icon in a future update. Instead, verification details and account information will be moved directly to a business profile page.
