IPL 2026: Shreyas Iyer ahead of Dhoni, Rohit, Gambhir in IPL captaincy list: Check staggering numbers
Shreyas Iyer is emerging as a strong contender for India’s next T20I captaincy. His impressive IPL captaincy record, including leading three different franchises to finals, is bolstered by his recent batting resurgence. With Suryakumar Yadav facing form concerns, Iyer’s proven leadership and consistent performances position him favorably for the upcoming T20 cycle.

Shreyas Iyer’s name is increasingly doing the rounds as India’s potential next T20I captain, and not without reason. With questions beginning to emerge around incumbent skipper Suryakumar Yadav’s long-term place in the format following another inconsistent IPL season, the conversation around India’s next leadership cycle has quietly gathered pace over the past few weeks.Suryakumar remains India’s World Cup-winning captain, but his struggles with the bat in IPL 2026 have once again amplified concerns around form, age and continuity heading into the next T20 cycle that culminates with the 2028 World Cup and the Los Angeles Olympics.

And while perception and momentum seem to currently favor Iyer, the numbers are also increasingly beginning to back the Mumbaikar.Among IPL captains with a minimum of 50 matches, Iyer currently owns the joint-best win/loss ratio in tournament history at 1.420, level with Sachin Tendulkar (51 matches) and ahead of some of the biggest captaincy names the league has seen like Ms Dhoni, Rohit Sharma and even the current India coach Gauam Gambhir.

And unlike many long-serving IPL captains who have the luxury of settled squads and stable cores, Iyer has overseen revivals and transitions. He took Delhi Capitals to their first-ever IPL final in 2020 while scoring 519 runs himself that season. Four years later, he guided Kolkata Knight Riders to their first IPL title in 12 years. Then came Punjab Kings, where he immediately oversaw another dramatic turnaround by taking the franchise to its first IPL final in more than a decade. He thus became the first captain to lead three different franchises to the IPL final. And add to the fact that, Iyer’s rise has coincided with a sharp evolution in his batting as well. His 604-run season for Punjab Kings at a strike rate of 175.07 was arguably the most complete T20 batting season of his career.India do have other leadership options in the format. Sanju Samson remains part of the T20I setup, Ishan Kishan is another name under consideration, Iyer has a clear advantage – nearly 100 IPL games as captain. Success across three franchises. Proven leader. And now, increasingly, the batting numbers to match the leadership reputation.
