Koraput: Resentment is increasing among residents over the inordinate delay in completion of the rejuvenation project of the 250-year-old Neelakantha lake in Jeypore. The Jeypore municipality signed an MoU with the National Buildings Construction Corporation Ltd (NBCC) in Aug 2021 to develop the historic lake into a major tourist hub at an estimated cost of Rs 9.87 crore. Around 5 years have passed since.“It is disappointing that the project is yet to be completed. Residents had hoped the work would be finished on schedule, but there has been no progress,” said Devendra Adhikari, a Jeypore-based activist.Officials said the rejuvenation work includes de-silting and de-weeding of the lake, strengthening of embankments, and adoption of natural methods for conservation and sustainable development of the water body to improve the ecosystem. The detailed project report (DPR), approved by the district administration, also envisages a children’s park, jogging track, viewpoints, senior citizen zone, musical fountains, small islands and community seating spaces, among other facilities.During his visit in Jan to review the progress of the work, Koraput collector Manoj Satyawan Mahajan expressed displeasure over the slow pace of execution and directed the agency to complete the project at the earliest.“Once completed, Neelakantha Sagar will undoubtedly emerge as a major tourist attraction. The authorities concerned should take necessary steps to ensure early completion of the project,” said environmentalist Paresh Rath.Excavated in 1781 during the reign of Maharaja Vikram Deo-I of Jeypore to meet the town’s water requirements, the lake now spreads over around 15 acres.Acknowledging the delay and repeated failure to meet deadlines, officials said action would be initiated against the executing agency.“Around 80% of the project work has been completed. Despite several reminders, the executing agency had assured completion by Feb 28, 2026. However, the work has now stopped. A fresh showcause notice will be issued, followed by necessary action,” said Puja Rout, executive officer of Jeypore municipality.
