Monster of the deep: Giant squid spotted in Western Australia after 25 years

The ocean does a great job of reminding us of how very little we really know about life beneath the ocean. Over the years, the Gigantic Squid was an object of legend. However, it is also a real sea creature that rarely shows its face to the human eye. A new and exciting discovery made in the deep canyons of Western Australia is changing that mythology. Researchers have discovered the existence of this mysterious giant in the East Indian Ocean, marking an important milestone in marine biology and the understanding of the depths.The revelation is based on a study in 2026 that was published by the scientific journal Environmental DNAusing cutting-edge technology to explore the depths of the Cape Range and Cloates Canyons. They are located near the famed Ningaloo coastline. These canyons delve into deep abyssal depths, making the area virtually impossible to discover by traditional methods. Analyzing water samples for genetic fingerprints, scientists have opened the door to an under-appreciated world where the huge squid reigns in the top position.The magic of environmental DNAWhat can you do to find an animal or creature that does not want to be discovered? For a long time, researchers relied on luck, cameras in deep seas or even the odd chance that a specimen came to shore. In this case, the group headed by Dr Georgia Nester turned to an approach known as eDNA metabarcoding. This method allows scientists to find animals by DNA traces left behind by them in liquid, like cellulite or skin cells.This study, which was the largest survey in this area, required the collection of 178 water of 178 samples at various levels, ranging as deep as 4,540 metres. In a study by watoday the research found evidence of 226 species spread across more than 126 family groups. Although the giant squid dominated the spotlight, it was only one of the inhabitants of an incredibly bustling and alien-like environment.Dr Nester noted that the possibility of detecting thousands of species within one water sample could be an important step in conservation. The canyons are mostly unexplored due to the extreme darkness and pressure at these deep depths, which makes physical exploration extremely challenging. The eDNA results suggest there’s an abundance of life-forms in the trenches, which we’re only beginning to discover.

A rare glimpse into a hidden worldThe massive squid is a truly amazing piece of the natural world. Based on data from the Smithsonian Ocean, the largest ever squid was recorded at a length of 43 feet. The creatures were designed to exist in darkness, having eyes as big as basketballs that can capture only the tiniest glimpses of bioluminescence. Although they’re believed to inhabit oceans across the globe, they’re notoriously difficult to locate in tropical areas.In the past, it was not an official sighting or a specimen of a massive squid found in Western Australia for over 25 years. Dr Lisa Kirkendale from the WA Museum highlighted the significance of the discovery, stating that it is the most northern known record of the species found, located in the eastern part of the Indian Ocean. This confirms that the deep canyons function as the main route for many of the world’s most mysterious creatures.The research didn’t only find Squid. Researchers also discovered the cusk-eel with no face at first on Western Australian waters, alongside deep-diving mammals such as the pygmy sperm whale, as well as Cuvier’s Beaked Whale. The species that were found do not exactly match known records, suggesting that a lot of these deep-sea inhabitants could be unknown to scientists.Why this discovery matters for our futureA giant squid’s discovery is more than looking up a place in a listing of scarce species. It’s a sign of the vitality and diversity of the oceans. Deep-sea canyons are refugia for biodiversity, shielding them from the immediate impact of human activities. But, they’re not immune to the change happening in the world’s climate. If we map these species right now, scientists will be able to better understand the best ways to safeguard these delicate habitats.The usage of eDNA offers a non-invasive method to observe these “blue holes” of biodiversity. Instead of disrupting the ecosystem by means of the use of heavy equipment, scientists could play detectives and piece together the history of the ocean using the DNA that is left by the ocean. In the process of exploring this region of the Ningaloo coast and the broader region, we can see that the deep sea has plenty to offer. The giant Squid is a symbol of the deep ocean’s mystery that never ceases to amaze us, shivering through the dark canyons that lie off the Australian coast, waiting for its story to be discovered.
