Gurgaon: Construction of a building for Government Senior Secondary Boys School in Civil Lines, which has been delayed for over six years, is now facing a new hurdle. The building for the new Civil Hospital is supposed to come up on half the area of the campus. This has happened even as a proposal to construct a modern campus for the over 100-year-old school mooted nearly six years ago is still moving from desk to desk. Student enrollment has steadily increased, but space has shrunk. The school is now left with just 10 classrooms and is finding it hard to accommodate students. An officials said around 25 to 30 classrooms are required to accommodate all students. The portion of the school land handed over for the hospital included 18 classrooms, eight laboratories, two smart classrooms, one hall, one sports hall, three offices, two mid-day meal rooms, one NCC room, two staff rooms, a water supply control room with electricity facilities, and 31 bathrooms. Interestingly, several of these structures are still in good condition, raising concerns over the loss of functional academic space amid growing student needs.Instead, several classes are being conducted under temporary arrangements. And the new hospital, meanwhile, is far from taking shape.A new site of around three acres has been identified near Mahavir Chowk where a modern building, equipped with better facilities. The district education department has prepared and submitted a feasibility report to the directorate of education and approval is awaited.“The budget for the Rs 7.5-crore project has been sanctioned. After the approval, PWD is going to begin construction,” an official said. According to the plan, classes 9 to 12 will shift to the new building, while the existing structure will be used for Classes 6 to 8. The school management is also exploring support from NGOs to improve the old campus. The old hospital building on the school land was demolished in Dec 2022 after multiple incidents of roof collapse were reported during 2015–16. The hospital has since been shifted to Sector 10, and a new facility is proposed, with advanced services such as CT scan, MRI, radiology, oncology, pathology and blood transfusion, in the same area. However, officials said construction of the new hospital building will also take time.
