Hostel life at the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur just got a whole lot more wholesome after a group of students decided not to let storm-fallen raw mangoes go to waste. Instead of ignoring the mangoes scattered around campus, they turned them into homemade pickle right inside their hostel – and the internet is loving every bit of it.The now-viral video was posted on Instagram by student Ajay Patel, who gave viewers a fun peek into the pickle-making session happening inside BC Roy Hall. Introducing his friend Narayan in the clip, Patel jokingly says that IIT students don’t just study engineering – they also know how to make mango pickle.Narayan then walks viewers through the process like a pro. He explains that after a recent storm on campus, several raw mangoes fell from the trees around the hostel. The students collected them, chopped them up, and mixed the pieces with turmeric and salt before setting them aside to dry in the sun for a couple of days.He also proudly shows the spice mix prepared for the achar. According to him, the blend includes mustard seeds, fennel, kalonji and fenugreek – basically all the ingredients needed for that classic homemade taste many Indians instantly recognize. The video also gives a glimpse of the mango trees standing inside the hostel campus. Patel points out that BC Roy Hall has quite a few of them, and because of the ongoing stormy weather, mangoes have been falling regularly. While this season apparently didn’t bring a huge harvest, the students still decided to make the most of whatever they got.Ending the clip on a cheerful note, Patel says they’ll show everyone the final pickle once it’s ready and packed into jars. The video, captioned “Aam ka aachar inside IIT hostel,” quickly struck a chord online. Many viewers said it reminded them of hostel days, summer vacations and the kind of jugaad-filled memories that become stories for life. The comments section was full of amused reactions. One person called it “the most Indian hostel moment ever,” while another summed up Narayan with the phrase “sarv gun sampann.” Several others joked that he had mastered the true art of survival, while some said the clip felt more comforting than an actual campus tour video. For many online, it wasn’t just about mango pickle – it was a reminder that sometimes the best hostel memories are made in tiny shared moments like these.
