Teen dies by suicide over low CBSE board marks

Gurgaon: A Class X student died by suicide at his residence in Pataudi on Wednesday evening, shortly after checking his Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) examination results. The deceased, Kunal, was a resident of Baba Hardev Colony in Jatauli village and studied at a local senior secondary school. No note was recovered from the spot and police said further proceedings are being carried out as per protocol.Kunal’s family told police the incident occurred a few hours after the results were declared. They said the teenager became distressed over his marks, which were lower than his expectations. As per a family member, Kunal went to a room on the terrace of his house after checking his result. Family members who were searching for him noticed that the terrace room was locked from the inside.“They knocked repeatedly but received no response. Suspecting something was wrong, his father looked through a small window in the room and saw the boy hanging,” an officer said. The father managed to get in through the window and in the process sustained injuries. The family rushed him to a hospital where he was declared dead on arrival, the officer said.A relative of the deceased said the family had tried to cheer him up after he looked at his result. “The family had told him that he could reappear if he felt he had scored less. But he was very disappointed. The family is now shattered,” he said.Kunal’s father, who works as a supervisor in the Indian Railways in the food department, had also booked a laptop for his son because he had successfully cleared the exam, the relative said.Police said investigation proceedings were initiated under Section 194 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS). A post-mortem examination was conducted on Thursday, after which the body was handed over to the family for last rites.Meanwhile, a 24-year-old man tried to self-immolate near a college opposite the Sector 40 police station on Wednesday night, police said. The injured, a native of Sitapur, UP, had doused himself with petrol and set himself on fire. The fire was quickly extinguished but the man had sustained 60% burn injuries by then, an officer said. He is currently under treatment at a government hospital.Preliminary investigation has found he was in a live-in relationship with a woman with whom he had been having arguments for the past few days. He lived in Sector 31 and worked as a taxi driver.“We will record the youth’s statement after the hospital gives a fitness clearance,” he said, adding that the youth had not come to the police station before attempting self-immolation.
