Tamil Film Producers Council (TFPC) is staunchly taking a stance on the prevailing industry issues, particularly OTT releases and rules for theatres. Recent developments regarding demands from theaters and distributors have created a stir as they try to decide when films should be released on OTT. Producers, however feel these conditions affect their business and their right to trade freely. TFPC has rebuked the issues and mentioned that there should be a balanced order for everyone in the industry.8-week OTT rule explainedThe issue is with the new stipulation initiated by cinema theater owners that only allows OTT release of movies 8 weeks after theatrical release. As reported by Daily Thanthi, they have also warned of unrest if a movie does not comply with this new policy. Currently, most films are released on OTT within 4 weeks, helping producers recover investments faster. TFPC has strongly opposed this 8-week rule and stated that forcing producers to sign such agreements is unfair and unacceptable.TFPC big meeting planned on May 10The issue is not limited to Tamil cinema alone. Producers from Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and Kerala are also coming together to discuss this matter. A major meeting is scheduled on May 10, 2026, where a joint decision will be taken. There are talks that if the issue is not resolved, producers may stop releasing films across all four states from a fixed date. This shows the seriousness of the situation and how united the producers are becoming.Strike warning and revenue sharing modelTFPC has also announced other important steps to protect producers. They have suggested a revenue-sharing model where actors and technicians work based on a profit share instead of high salaries. A token strike has been planned for May 2 to highlight their demands. TFPC also warned that any producer signing OTT agreements without informing the council will not receive industry support.Disclaimer: This report is for informational purposes and does not reflect final official policies until imposed by the respective state film chambers.
