Kanpur: Citizens continue to battle intense heat as the city stays under scorching temperatures above 40°C for the third straight day. However, Tuesday brought only a slight dip and negligible relief. The Air Force Chakeri observatory logged a maximum of 41.8°C while CSA University recorded 40.1°C. Both were marginally lower than Monday, but the ‘feels-like’ temperature hovered around 45°C, keeping residents distressed.For those outdoors, especially around 4 pm, conditions felt unchanged from Monday. People called the heat draining and exhausting. Water bottles became a lifeline, with stalls selling nimbu paani and sugarcane juice seeing long queues as people looked for any relief from the dry and scorching air.The extreme weather has disrupted daily routines. Advocates, who typically leave court premises by 3 pm, are now staying back in their chambers until evening. Senior advocate Pramod Shankar Mishra, aged over 70, said he prefers to leave after 5 pm when temperatures are slightly lower.Parents have flagged concerns over school timings clashing with peak heat hours. One parent urged authorities to end classes earlier to protect children from the harsh afternoon sun. Traders, meanwhile, are adapting. Many have shifted to early morning hours, opening shops at dawn and closing by noon to avoid the worst of the heat.The discomfort is worsened by weather conditions. Relative humidity dropped to 40%, making the heat feel sharper. North-westerly winds at 7.9 kmph added to the dry, scorching conditions, the Met office said.The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast a continued rise in temperatures across the Kanpur division, with bright sunshine and possible high-altitude cloud movement. Strong, hot winds resembling heatwave conditions are expected during the day.Weather expert S Sunil Pandey from CSA University stated that no significant relief is expected before April 24 and warned that temperatures could climb up to 43°C. He advised citizens to avoid outdoor activities during noon and afternoon hours and to stay well hydrated, whether indoors or outside.
